Under theBlanket of Night

darkness lies upon me like a balm
soothing respite
from the world’s assault upon my senses

rain drips against the window glass
calming reassurance -
thunder echoes God’s strength into the night

I am safe here

alone in my bed
my thoughts are my own to hear
only dreams await my attention

night is but a moment of freedom -
morning, a traitor
returning me to the imprisonment of life

and I,
I am the darkness
swallowing the colors of the day
until my head aches with disillusionment

evening falls as a blanket
upon my weary mind

I am safe here
