Love Denied

The wind cries in anguish
As he stands above the sea
Looking out beyond the waves
As if his heart could see

That far across the ocean
Another stands alone
Longing to be there with him
Upon that cliff of stone

The angry waves beneath her
Echo loudly thoughts within
Defiance of a world that failed
To see what might have been

A quiet life within the glen
They'd spoken of at length
Children raised with modesty
And cherished inner strength

They'd face the future bravely
Making do with what they had
Eating what the land would give
And dressed in homespun plaid

But her parents did not see the dream
They'd spun from moonlit nights
They believed she'd be distracted
If they brought her wondrous sights.

And so they placed her on a ship
Set sail for lands away
In search of proper gentlemen
Impetuosity to stay

But wrongly did they estimate
How strong, their daughters will
And though the years pass swiftly
How she longs for his love still

And so when misted moonlight
Lays upon these coasts apart
Two lovers stand in vigil
Each one nursing a broken heart.
